Music with Margin Alexander
Nocturnal Canvas, 2023
This event, in the format of a "music exhibition," was a small instrumental concert open to all music and art admirers. Margin Alexander, a NYC-based composer and pianist, selected artworks from a dozen international artists whose work inspired him to compose original music.
I was one of the artists selected by Mr. Alexander. He told me that my work filled him with feelings of modernity crossed with antiquity. As he spent time with my piece projected in his studio, he could see the small details that gave him the perception of a mosaic. The gathering of little elements forms the big phases and reflects the structure of the canvas. A plentiful work filled with power and rhythm, the viewer encounters a wonderful combination of toning carefully laced with the texture that the painting has spread all across.
Mr. Alexander is deeply sensitive to shapes, colors, and visual effects. This type of synesthesia has always allowed him to hear music, timbres, sounds, and other aural cues. Each artist was invited to exhibit their works, and during the reception, Mr. Alexander introduced each artwork and played the original music he was inspired to create in response.
The event was broadcast online and was later followed by an outdoor projection of the participating works in the NYC area.
